How to Repot Plants

Repotting houseplants is much like repotting nursery stock. Start by knowing what needs to be done before jumping into action. A good plan will produce outstanding effort in the end.

Many houseplants grow out of their containers over time and need repotting. Some of the signs of plants that need repotting is yellowing foliage or perhaps a massive root system within the pot. Heavy root systems can sometimes cause girdling which can reduce water intake as well as fertilizer deficiency. Keep in mind however that not all houseplants need to be repotted, some do better when the roots are restricted. Before you repot a plant, do a little research on the houseplant in question. We recommend calling a local nursery such as Aloha Home and Garden in Boise and talk to an associate about repotting your favorite houseplant.

Certain things to keep in mind when repotting:

1. Recognizing when your houseplant needs repotting.

2. Determining the type and size of the pot needed.

3. Where do I find information on repotting my houseplant?

4. What kind of care does my houseplant require?

These are some of the questions that may arise as you consider repotting a plant. We recommend researching information at a bookstore or on the internet for more information.
